When searching for Koh Samui travel tips you’ll find that it’s pretty straightforward to get to Koh Samui with many flights per day from Bangkok to Koh Samui for around $90 and only a 1 hour flight.

Koh Samui’s Chaweng Airport is located right next to its largest city with the same name. It is very easily accessible with minibus for the low cost of 150 baht ($5) you can get from the airport to Chaweng city.

You can also grab a taxi for around 300 baht ($9) or rent a car at Avis, Hertz, Sixt or Budget at the airport. Prices vary depending on how many days and what type of vehicle you want to hire. Make sure to bring your drivers license and passport to the car rental station when renting a car.

Koh Samui

Koh Samui doesn’t have public transport buses or trains. It relies on converted pickup trucks called ‘song-teows’ that run 24 hours around the island. They are easy to find during the day but harder at night unless you’re in the major nightlife spots on the island like Chaweng or Lamai. Always negotiate fares before boarding. 200-400 ($6-$12) baht depending on the 15-30 minute rides.

Motorbike taxis are also available around the island and should cost around 150-200 ($4-$6) baht for a 20-30 minute ride. Be aware that the drivers can drive very fast and even though they are experienced, it can feel a bit scary at first.

Since Koh Samui is a pretty large island with plenty of attractions and cities spread out around the island, renting your own motorcycle or car is recommended to make the most out of the experience.

Motorbikes are modern, fast scooters with one gear and start at 150-250 baht ($4-$8) per day. Cars rentals start around 800 baht ($25) per day.

Local Thai food like Pad Thai, Fried rice with curry and various Thai curry can be found all around the island and is a must to try at least once. The prices are extremely affordable at only 50 baht ($1.5) per meal.

In Chaweng city there’s an abundance of nice restaurants with tastes from all around the world. Step into any local thai restaurant and you will be pleased with what you find. There’s indian restaurants, italian, american BBQ and many more. All you could ask for food wise is in Chaweng.

Koh Samui and Thailand have a wide variety of fresh fruits growing on the island such as mango, papaya, coconut and watermelon. Since the days get very hot and it’s easy to lose a lot of water during the day make sure to hydrate properly. Enjoy an amazing sunset on the west side of the island with a fresh fruit shake and feel the calm breeze of the wind.
